Bilal Batley joined the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program in June 2017 as director of on-campus relations.
He assumed his current duties as director of program strategy and player relations in June 2021.
During his time at Houston, Batley has been a key part of teams which have won 243 games, captured nine Big 12 and American Athletic Conference championships and appeared in seven straight NCAA Tournaments, including the Final Four in 2025 and 2021, the Elite Eight in 2022 and the Sweet 16 in 2019, 2023 and 2024.
Batley -- whose name is pronounced Buh-Lahl (rhymes with doll) Bat-Lee -- is long familiar with Head Coach Kelvin Sampson. He was a student manager at the University of Oklahoma from 2004 to 2006, earning his bachelor’s degree in sociology from OU in 2007.
From there, he continued his relationship with Sampson as a graduate assistant at Indiana during the 2007-08 season.
Before joining the Cougars, Batley worked with Dynasty Sports during the 2016-17 season.
Prior to that, he worked as the head coach at Paris Junior College during the 2015-16 season and was an assistant coach at UIW in 2013-14.
As an assistant coach at Paris Junior College in 2013-14, he helped the team to a 26-8 overall record, the regular-season and conference tournament championships and a berth in the Sweet 16 in the National Tournament.
During his tenure as assistant coach at Navarro Junior College, the 2011-12 team won the Region XIV Tournament championship and advanced to the National Tournament, while the 2010-11 team enjoyed a 20-win season and received the All-Academic Team Award with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
In addition to his coaching stints, Batley has served as assistant director of operations at Memphis (2008-09) and at Kentucky (2009).
In 2009, Batley served as head of player development for John Lucas Resources, where he specialized in skill development, working with young players to prepare them for the NBA Draft with veteran NBA players looking to improve their skill sets.
He and his wife, Marlania, have a son, Joseph, who was born in May 2024.
