Jason Russell joined the University of Houston Men's Basketball program as its sports performance coach in July 2014.
Russell, who is a native of Corsicana, Texas, came to Houston after working for 18 months as assistant strength and conditioning coach at California. While in Berkeley, Russell directed the strength and conditioning program from the Women's Gymnastics team and assisted with the Football team.
He joined the Louisiana Tech strength and conditioning staff in June 2011, working with the Men's Basketball team and assisting with the Football program.
Prior to that, Russell served as a volunteer assistant coach and intern at Sam Houston State for nearly three years. There, he worked with the Men's and Women's Golf teams and assisted with the Football and other sports programs.
Russell was a three-year letterman on the Sam Houston State track and field team, competing in the shot put, hammer and weight throw from 2009 to 2011. He was an All-Southland Conference Second-Team performer in the weight throw and as a team captain and was a member of the Southland Conference All-Academic Team.
He received his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Sam Houston State in 2010 and earned his master's degree in sports performance from Louisiana Tech in 2012.
Russell is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
