Sam Roth joined University of Houston Athletics in June 2023 as its Division I Sports Physical Therapy Fellow before transitioning to Associate Director of Sports Medicine / Director of Rehabilitation in May 2024. The 2025 season will be his third with Houston Football.
Roth currently serves in a dual role as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for Football while overseeing post-operative rehabilitation for student-athletes across Houston’s 17 sport programs. He manages and coordinates the reintegration of post-operative student-athletes into team activities through collaboration with physicians, athletic trainers, performance staff and coaches. Roth also supervises preseason functional testing and in-season injury tracking while working to implement injury reduction strategies.
He coordinates sport coverage and mentorship for Houston’s Division I Physical Therapy Fellow, Sports Physical Therapy Resident and Upper Extremity Physical Therapy Fellow in collaboration with Memorial Hermann while also serving as a clinical instructor in the University of Houston Masters of Athletic Training Program.
As Houston’s Division I Sports Physical Therapy Fellow from June 2023-May 2024, Roth worked primarily with Houston’s football, basketball, and baseball teams while assisting with post-operative rehabilitation and return to play assessments for athletes across all sports.
Prior to the University of Houston, Roth completed a sports physical therapy residency through Memorial Hermann Rockets Sports Medicine Institute in partnership with Houston Christian University (FCS) and George Ranch High School (6A).
Roth earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Nebraska in May 2019 and his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in December 2021. At Nebraska, he worked primarily with their football and men’s basketball teams, while also completing an NFL training camp internship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018.
Roth is a board-certified specialist in Sports Physical Therapy among other certifications. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and Texas Physical Therapy Association.
