Coaching Accomplishments
• Dan Carrel was promoted to Houston's outside linebackers coach on Jan. 6, 2017 following two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant with the Cougars working with the team’s outside linebackers.
• Carrel’s second season in the role saw senior outside linebacker Emeke Egbule lead all linebackers in The American with seven passes defended - five pass breakups and two interceptions. Egbule also ranked second in the league and fifth nationally with three fumble recoveries on the year, one returned for a touchdown against ECU.Â
• Carrel’s first season as a full-time assistant coach saw Khalil Williams earn second-team honors from The American as he led all defensive backs in the league with eight tackles for loss.
• Carrel was part of a defensive staff helped Houston to a ranking of second in The American in rushing defense (147.9 yards per game), scoring defense (23.8 points per game), pass efficiency defense (121.5) and red zone defense (77.1 percent).
• Part of a staff that helped UH rank 13th nationally in total defense and fourth in rushing defense in 2016.
•Team finished second in The American in sacks, scoring defense and total defense while leading the league in rushing defense.
• Outside linebacker Tyus Bowser (Second Team) earned All-Conference honors from The American in 2016. Bowser ended the year in a tie for third in the league with 8.5 sacks despite missing five games due to injury.
• In his first season at Houston, the Cougars’ defense forced 12 teams below their scoring average with the two teams eclipsing their average, doing so by less than one point.
• The defense led the nation with 35 takeaways while ranking eighth nationally in rushing defense.
• He spent the 2014 season as a defensive graduate assistant at Kentucky.
• Carrel spent the 2013 season as an offensive graduate assistant at Ohio State, assisting the Buckeyes’ offensive line. In his lone season in Columbus, Ohio State played in the Big Ten Championship and the 2014 Orange Bowl.
• The two-year letterman at West Liberty spent the 2012 season at his alma mater as a defensive graduate assistant after starting his career as a strength and conditioning intern at South Carolina.
