Cougars fall, 4-3, to Jayhawks in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The #40 University of Houston Tennis team dropped a heartbreaker, 4-3, to #48 Kansas on Friday evening at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

The Cougars (12-4, 3-4 Big 12) fell behind early in the doubles point as juniors Iva Sepa and Valeriia Krokhotina lost to Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Meg McCarty, 6-4. Junior duo Petja Drame and Elizaveta Morozova evened the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Meriem Ben Ezzedine and Kyoka Kubo on court three.

Seniors Sophie Schouten and Chems Doha Zeghlouli used an ace on match point to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars in the tiebreak, 7-6(2).

Kansas (8-7, 4-2 Big 12) evened the match as Zeghlouli fell to Janse Van Vuuren, 6-1, 6-3.

Sepa responded on court three when she defeated Yerkenzhan, 7-5, 6-1 to put Houston back in front.

The Jayhawks once again tied the match as Morozova fell to Kubo, 7-5, 6-2, on court one before taking the lead on court six as Schouten dropped her first singles match of the season falling 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 against Anna Putilina.

After dropping the first set, Krokhotina fought back to level the match at three when she defeated Ben Ezzedine, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The match came down to a tiebreak on court five as Meg McCarty pulled out the victory, defeating Drame 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
