Houston holds Lamar to two hits; earns fifth shutout victory of the season

The Cougars (16-10) earned their fifth shutout victory of the season, holding the Cardinals (11-14) scoreless through a combo pitching performance from sophomore Nevaeh Brown (9-3) and redshirt-senior Paris Lehman to earn her second save of the year.

NOTABLES
- Sophomore Ariel Redmond snapped an eight-game homer-less streak with a leadoff blast in the bottom of the first, marking her eighth of the season.
- Junior Makenna Mitchell joined in on the fun with a solo homer in the bottom of the second, good for her ninth of the year to matching her 2025 season total (nine in 45 games).
- Sophomore Madox Mitchael almost hit for the cycle, going 3-for-4 on the night with a single, double and triple.
- Graduate Kylei Griffin returned to action for the first time in 18 games (last appeared on Feb. 13 vs Penn State), entering as a pinch hitter in place of freshman Leilani Garcia in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Brown and Lehman combined for seven scoreless innings, spinning six strikeouts and giving up only two hits between themselves while earning Lehman her second save of the season.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Sitting on a 2-2 count, Redmond opened the game with a leadoff solo blast to left field, giving Houston a 1-0 lead early. With runners on second and third on one out, Mitchael stamped her name on the night with a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Mitchell and freshman RyLee Gardner to extend the lead to 3-0 in the first.

2nd | Leading a 1-0 count with two outs in the second, Mitchell produced a solo shot to left center, just clearing the wall to add another run to the Cougars' cause at 4-0.

5th | Following a triple to left center from Mitchael and a five-pitch walk to freshman Ronnie Esparza, senior Mandy Esman joined in on the fun with a pop single into shallow left field, scoring Mitchael to cap off the scoring for Houston at 5-0 on the night.

UP NEXT
Houston plays host to its second Big 12 weekend against Kansas from March 13-15, with first pitch to the series opener set for 6 p.m., Friday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
