Freshman point guard becomes first freshman in program history to earn All-America honors
HOUSTON – University of Houston freshman point guard Kingston Flemings continued to add to his trophy case when he was named to the All-America Second Team by The Sporting News on Wednesday morning. With his selection, Flemings became the first freshman in program history to earn All-America honors.
"Kingston came here with a maturity and a passion for competing. He absolutely loves to play basketball. He is one of the best teammates and one of the greatest kids. Everything about off the court reflects everything he does on the court. I could not be happier for him, his family and our program," Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said.
This was only the latest award for Flemings this week. He was named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate point guard by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Flemings also was a unanimous selection for both the All-Big 12 Conference Team and the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Thomas Haugh (Florida) Braden Smith (Purdue), Keaton Wagler (Illinois) and JT Toppin (Texas Tech) joined Flemings on the Second Team. Yaxel Lendeborg (Michigan), AJ Dybantsa (Michigan), Darius Acuff Jr. (Arkansas), Cameron Boozer (Duke) and Joshua Jefferson (Iowa State) were named to The Sporting News First Team.
Prior to this season, Houston greats Clyde Drexler, Rob Williams, Hakeem Olajuwon and Craig Upchurch were the youngest Cougars (by class) to receive All-America status.
Drexler was named The Sporting News Honorable Mention in 1982, Williams was named to the Third Team by the Associated Press in 1981 and Olajuwon was a Third-Team honoree by Basketball Times and an AP and UPI Honorable Mention in 1983 with each as a sophomore.
Upchurch was the most recent sophomore to be honored as an All-American, receiving Honorable Mention in 1989.
