Freshman guard Kingston Flemings tallies a career-high 42 points in 90-86 loss to Red Raiders
LUBBOCK (AP) – University of Houston freshman point guard Kingston Flemings scored a career-high 42 points, but it would not be enough as the #6/6 University of Houston Men's Basketball program dropped its first Big 12 Conference game of the season, 90-86, to #12/12 Texas Tech inside United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday afternoon.Flemings drained 15 of his 26 field goal attempts and went 8-of-10 from the free throw line and added career highs in field goals (15), field goal attempts (26), 3-ooint field goals (4), 3-point field goal attempts (9), free throws (8) and free throw attempts (10).
With his point total, Flemings tied for the 17th-highest single-game total in school history and set the Houston freshman single-game scoring record. His total topped the previous high of 34 points by guard Rob Williams against Rice on February 25, 1980.
Flemings posted the highest point total in Houston single-game history since guard Robert McKiver finished with 52 points against Southern Miss inside Hofheinz Pavilion on February 27, 2008.
Senior guard Emanuel Sharp added 20 points for Houston while junior forward Joseph Tugler and freshman center/forward Chris Cenac Jr. each snared a team-high seven rebounds with six coming off the offensive glass for Tugler.
With the loss, the Cougars saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end. It also snapped Houston's Big 12- and school-record 16 game road winning streak. Prior to Saturday, Houston had not lost a road game since a 78-65 loss at Kansas on February 3, 2024.
JT Toppin scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Donovan Atwell hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Red Raiders ahead late.
Texas Tech (16-4, 6-1) had 10 made 3s in the first half when scoring 55 points by halftime. The Red Raiders made only two from beyond the arc after halftime, Atwell hitting the go-ahead 3 with 5:55 left and adding another 34 seconds later.
There were eight lead changes and eight ties in the game that Houston led for 18 minutes, 41 seconds, and Tech led 18:12.
Atwell, who finished with five 3s, and Jaylen Petty both had 18 points. Christian Anderson had 12 points with nine assists.
