Cougars earn first win over the Longhorns since 2000
HOUSTON – After conceding a goal in the first half, the University of Houston Soccer Team scored four unanswered goals in the second half for a 4-1 victory over rv Texas on Sunday evening at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
The victory marked the first home and second ever win for Houston (2-0-1) over Texas (1-2-1), and the first in regulation. The four goals conceded are the most goals the Longhorns have allowed against the Cougars.
Texas scored in the first half when Olivia Ahearn found Amalia Villerreal in the 12th minute for her second goal of the season.
Houston surged in the second half when senior Morgan Donohue cashed in on the cross from sophomore Amanda Adams in the 47th minute to tie the match.
After a handball inside the penalty box was confirmed after review, senior Cameryn Maddox converted the penalty kick in the 49th minute to put the Cougars ahead, 2-1.
In the 54th minute, sophomore Blake Hodgson scored her first-career goal as Maddox and freshman Amaris Bumba teamed up for the assist.
Freshman Samira Minor tallied her first career assist as she set up junior Kyrsten Kizer to score the fourth goal of the evening in the 70th minute.
