Houston sprays 16 hits, most in a Big 12 game, plates 13 against Arizona
Â
Houston's 16 hits are the most by the club in Big 12 Conference-play since joining the league while the 13 runs are tied for the most by the Cougars (29-22, 12-15 Big 12) in a Big 12 game.
Â
Houston received production from the entirety of its lineup with six Cougars recording multi-hit games and three Houston players driving in 3+ runs.
Â
In and out of the lineup due to injury over the last three weeks, designated hitter Connor McGinnis showed he's once again healthy with a three-hit, three-RBI game falling a homer run shy of the cycle.
Â
Center fielder Tre Broussard drove in a game-high four runs on a trio of hits highlighted by a three-run opposite field home run that set the Schroeder Park faithful on fire and gave the Cougars an 8-4 lead.
Â
Houston and Arizona (34-18, 16-12 Big 12) clawed back and forth throughout the first few innings with each team exchanging blows. Houston struck first in the first inning on McGinnis' RBI triple. Arizona took the lead in the second on a two-run triple of its own.
Â
In the third inning, the Cougars retook the lead via McGinnis' RBI double and a ground out from left fielder Malachi Lott and saw its lead evaporate on a Wildcat two-run home run.
Â
The Cougars scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the first time this season scoring 5+ in back-to-back innings.
Â
Broussard homered in the sixth to cap its first five-run inning that began with a two-run single from shortstop Tyler Cox–who is scalding hot and 13 for his last 21 (.619) with nine RBI in his last seven games.
Â
A six-hit seventh brought the final five runs of the game around to score in the seventh.
Â
Left-handed pitcher Antoine Jean (5-1) earned his team-leading fifth win in 3.0 innings of hitless work. Jean did not finish the game, thanks to Houston's nine run lead, for the first time since March 12, and struck out two hitters while not allowing a hit.
