Cougars Clinch Fourth-Straight Silver Glove Series

HOUSTON – Sophomore Diego Luzardo carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his first collegiate start en route to his first win of the year as the Houston Baseball team clinched its fourth-straight Silver Glove Series over Rice with a 10-7 win on Tuesday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

Luzardo (1-0) did not allow a base hit until the sixth inning when he gave up a lead-off home run, the first of four home runs by the Owls (7-28).

The sophomore struck out four over a career-high 5.1 innings to earn his first win of the year.

Sophomore Tre Broussard sprayed a career-high four hits around the ballpark and stole three bases in the game. The Houston native's 21-consecutive stolen bases streak was snapped on his first attempted steal. The streak is the second-longest in school history. Broussard's three stolen bases in one game is the second time the outfielder has done so this season.

The Cougars' lone long-ball of the game came off the bat of first baseman Cade Climie, his seventh of the season which is tied for the team lead.

Houston scored three of its 10 runs on free passes, two runs on sacrifice bunts, one run on a wild pitch and three runs on hits (two on singles and one via the home run).

Rice hit solo home runs in the eighth and ninth inning before a three-run homer cut Houston's lead to 10-7.

Houston has won five-straight games against Rice and won its ninth Silver Glove Series title.

UP NEXT
The Cougars return to Schroeder Park for a Wednesday tilt against McNeese and a weekend series against West Virginia. The Saturday game against West Virginia is Alumni/Former Player Reunion Day while the entirety of the series is Bark in Park – we hope to see all the pups at the yard.
