Four-Run First Supplies Sunday Win

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Tied in the ninth inning, Tyler Cox executed a hit-and-run to perfection throwing his hands at an outside pitch and plopping the ball down the right field line for a double that scored second baseman Anthony Avalos. The run gave Houston a 6-5 win over Kansas State on Sunday for the Cougars' 12th road win of the year.

An offensive outburst from Houston (23-20, 7-13 Big 12) in the first inning gave the visitors a 4-0 lead after the top half. Avalos smoked a three-run blast before outfielder Brandon Bishop detonated his second home run of the season in as many plate appearances – homering in back-to-back games.

Junior Cade Climie tied his season-high with a three-hit day, which included his team-leading ninth home run of the year.

The Cougars called on left-handed stalwart Antoine Jean earlier than usual, bringing the lefty in with just one out in the first inning. The Montreal, Canada, native ate innings, posting his longest career outing with 6.2 innings while striking out eight Wildcats.

Jean struck out the side in his final inning, the seventh, touching 94 mph after surpassing the 100-pitch mark for the first time this season. The lefty set a career-high with 112 pitches thrown.

Kansas State (26-18, 12-9 Big 12) hit two home runs in the first inning, part of a four-homer first inning by the two squads. The Wildcats never led however, tying the game in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout.

UP NEXT
The Cougars stay on the road through Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game at McNeese. Houston will then return to Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park for a three-game series against Utah Friday-Sunday. The game at McNeese will not be streamed but all three games against Utah will be streamed on ESPN+.
