Four drive in multiple runs, Tatom hits first home run as Cougar
With the 15-run offensive outburst on Tuesday, Houston (20-17) scored 43 total runs over the three-game Silver Glove Series, the most by the Cougars in a three-game series with Rice (9-30).
The Cougars scored 18 runs in the series opener on March 5, 10 runs on April 8 and 15 on Tuesday night. The 2016 Cougars scored 38 runs against the Owls over three games with a 24-run offensive outburst in one of the games.
Four Cougars drove in multiple runs while two sprayed multiple hits. Junior Jake Tatom hit his first home run as a Cougar, a two-run moonshot for his second hit of the game.
Tatom finished the game with three RBI. Sophomore Xavier Perez notched a pair of singles and drove in three runs. Perez finished the series with 11 RBI on six hits.
Juniors Cade Climie and Coby DeJesus each drove in a pair as well.
On the mound, junior Ryan Dollar (2-1) earned the win after pitching the first clean inning for the Cougars. Dollar struck out one and needed just nine pitches to retire the side.
Houston scored a pair of runs in the second inning on an error and a Perez RBI single.
The Cougars erupted for five runs on three hits and two Rice errors in the third inning. Climie drove in the first two on a single through the left side. Junior Tyler Cox pushed a run across on an error and Perez drove in two more on his second hit of the game.
Tatom's homer in the seventh inning gave the Cougars a 10-3 lead. DeJesus pushed two more across with a two-RBI single in the frame.
Pinch hitter Pip Smalley was hit by a pitch to drive in a run in the ninth and Climie plated two more on a bases loaded fielder's choice that resulted in an error.
