ABOUT the HOUSTON COUGARS
Under the leadership of The Sporting News and CBS Sports National Coach of the Year and two-time Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson, the 2024-25 Cougars enjoyed a season which will be long remembered by Houston fans.
The Cougars – who finished #2 in both national polls earlier this week – set a school single-season record with 35 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament National Championship Game before falling to Florida inside Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Monday.
Houston won 31 of its final 33 games to end the season and advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the seventh time in program history with a resounding 69-50 win over #6/6 (2) Tennessee during the Elite Eight in Indianapolis on March 30.
The Cougars swept the Big 12 Regular-Season and Tournament Championships in their second year in the league and set school and league records with a 19-1 mark in conference games. Houston became the first school to join a major conference and win the regular-season title in each of its first two years in the league in more than 100 years.
Graduate guard LJ Cryer earned numerous All-America honors after averaging a team-best 15.7 points per game and leading the Cougar and the Big 12 with 3.1 3-point field goals per game and a .424 3-point field goal percentage. He became only the third Cougar in school history with multiple seasons with 100+ 3-point field goals and joined Houston's career 1,000-Point Club.
Graduate forward J'Wan Roberts joined Cryer in the 1,000-Point Club and finished his career with 1,053 rebounds to rank third in school history. He became only the fourth Cougar to reach quadruple digits in both categories.
Junior guard Emanuel Sharp was named the Most Outstanding Player of both the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional and the Big 12 Championship and finished second on the team with 12.6 points and 2.4 3-pointers per game.
Sophomore forward Joseph Tugler received the Lefty Driesell Award as the nation's top defensive player and was a finalist for the Naismith National Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by MOLECULE. The Monroe, La., native averaged 5.9 rebounds and a team-best 1.9 blocks per game, including a season-high eight swats against #9/9 Alabama during the first day of the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas.
