Anthony Anderson joins Houston as an assistant coach under Head Coach Matthew Mitchell
HOUSTON – Anthony Anderson has joined the University of Houston Women's Basketball program as an assistant coach, Head Coach Matthew Mitchell announced Sunday.

"His impressive coaching career, deep understanding of the Texas basketball landscape and relentless work ethic make him an invaluable asset to our program. Anthony's commitment to effort and his passion for being a student of the game align perfectly with the values we are building here at Houston."
Anderson arrives at Houston after three seasons at SMU, where he helped lead the Mustangs to a WNIT appearance in his first season and played a role in the development of several All-American Athletic Conference honorees.
In the 2023-24 season, SMU averaged 69.8 points per game and ranked second in the AAC in field goal percentage (43.5%), assists per game (14.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.00). He coached Tiara Young to All-AAC Second Team honors and helped Chantae Embry earn the AAC Ambassador Award.
In his debut season with SMU, the Mustangs finished 17-13 and made their third consecutive WNIT appearance. It marked the program's first back-to-back postseason berths since 2014 and 2015. That season, SMU ranked second in the conference in scoring defense, holding opponents to only 58.3 points per game. Anderson coached three players – Savannah Wilkinson, Jasmine Smith and Ella Brow – to All-AAC recognition.
Before joining SMU, Anderson spent three seasons at UTEP, where the Miners compiled a 31-12 record at home. During his tenure, the program earned three All-Conference USA selections, one Honorable Mention and an All-Freshman Team nod. In 2020-21, UTEP went 13-5 in conference play and placed second in CUSA's West Division.
In 2018-19, Anderson served as recruiting coordinator under head coach Ravon Justice, who was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year that season.
From 2014 to 18, Anderson was an assistant coach at UTRGV. During that stretch, the program posted three consecutive 19-win seasons and made postseason tournament appearances in 2015 (WBI), 2016 (WNIT) and 2017 (WBI). He coached 2015-16 WAC Player of the Year Shawnte' Goff.
Earlier in his career, Anderson was an assistant men's basketball coach at Lamar State from 2012 to 2014 and associate head men's coach at Paul Quinn College, an NAIA school during the 2011-12 season.
Anderson earned his bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies from FIU in 2011 and his master's degree in sports coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2013.
