Tennis Wins First Big 12 Match on Sunday

Houston defeats Cincinnati in a 4-2 battle
HOUSTON – In the final home match of the season, the University of Houston Tennis team defeated Cincinnati, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
The Cougars (4-12, 1-9 Big 12) picked up their first Big 12 Conference win in program history with the victory over the Bearcats.
Cincinnati (7-10, 1-9 Big 12) secured the early advantage in doubles with a 6-3 win on court three by Zeynep Erman and Callie Flanagan over sophomores Valeriia Krokhotina and Heta Nuutinen. Gabrielle Guenther and Rozalia Gruszczynskao clinched the doubles point on court one after defeating juniors Gabriela Cortes and Sophie Schouten, 6-4.
Krokhotina picked up Houston's first single victory of the evening on court three as she defeated Milica Popovski, 6-1, 6-4. Krokhotina's victory marks her third-straight singles win and seventh of the season.
The Bearcats regained their lead as Guenther defeated Nuutinen, 6-2, 6-1, on court four.
The Cougars evened the score as Schouten came out victorious in a three-game match on court five against Sakurako Watanabe, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
After falling in the first set, 6-3, Cortes went on to win the next two, 6-3, 6-3 on court six against Isabel Pacheco to give Houston a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Iva Sepa quickly followed to give Houston its first Big 12 win on court two after a tightly contested three-game match, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-2.

The Cougars will close out the regular season with three road matches starting in Orlando, Fla., where they will face #19 UCF at 11 a.m. CT, Saturday.
From there, Houston will head to Salt Lake City, Utah, to face the Utes on Thursday, April 10 at 5 p.m. CT followed by BYU on Saturday, April 12, at noon, CT, in Provo, Utah.
