Houston Offense Erupts for Third Series Win
3/2/2025 5:38:00 PM | Baseball
Cougars score season-high 21 runs, wins third straight series
Â
Eleven different Cougars recorded hits, eight different Cougars recorded an RBI and nine different Cougars scored a run as Houston (7-3) scored 20+ runs for the first time since April 17, 2024 when the Cougars beat Southern 25-0.
Â
Third baseman Aaron Lugo led Houston with six RBI on four hits while designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez scored a team-high five runs. Jimenez became the first Cougar to score five runs in a game since Tyler Bielamowicz at Tulane on April 13, 2018. Jimenez was 90 feet from home in the ninth inning but did not score a sixth time. A Cougar has never scored six runs in a game.
Â
Houston scored in each of the first six innings, scoring multiple runs in five of the six innings, before scoring again in the ninth. The Cougars scored three runs in the first and third innings, four in the second, fifth and sixth, one run in the fourth and two in the ninth.
Â
UT Arlington (3-5) took a one-run lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Houston's four-run second inning gave the Cougars the lead which they would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon.
Â
Sophomore Xavier Perez hit a home run for the second straight game and drove in a career-high three runs in his first-career multi-hit game.
Â
With the win, the Cougars won their third consecutive non-conference series to open the season for the first time since 2019 and their 7-3 start is the best start since 2021 when they also started the year 7-3.
Â
Houston has scored double-digit runs in back-to-back games for the first time this season. The three-hour, 54-minute game was the longest of the season.
