Dollar sets career highs, Tatom drives in trio of runs at Cal
Houston (3-1) struck first with a three-run third inning. Catcher Riley Jackson led the inning off with his first collegiate hit and shortstop Tyler Cox recorded his first hit as a Cougar. With a pair on and two outs, designated hitter Connor McGinnis cleared the bases with a line drive to the right-center field gap.
McGinnis then stole third and scampered home on a single by right fielder Tatom to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Cox recorded his second hit of the game leading off the fifth inning with an infield single. A Cal (3-2) error put a pair on the bases for first baseman Cade Climie whose single through the left side plated Cox to give Houston a 4-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Tatom drove in two more on a bases loaded single through the left side.
Houston's heart of the order drove in all six runs, with the two-hole hitter Climie driving in one, McGinnis the three-hole hitter plating a pair and the cleanup hitter Tatom driving in a season-high three.
Right-handed pitcher Ryan Dollar (1-1) cruised through the first three innings, facing the minimum while only allowing a walk and getting an inning ending double play in the second inning.
Dollar had a no-hit bid through four but gave up a solo home run to open the fifth. The righty finished with a career-high 5.2 innings pitched with a career-best six strikeouts.
Sophomore right-hander Alex Solis entered with the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth and delivered a strikeout to end the inning.
Center fielder Tre Broussard saved the game in the eighth inning with a diving catch in left-center field. With Houston leading 6-3, Cal's Jacob French lined a pitch into the gap that the speedy Broussard flagged down with a leaping effort on the warning track.
