SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis team closes non-conference action when it faces UTSA at noon, Sunday from the UTSA Tennis Complex. Please note the time change from 10 a.m., to noon.

Fifth-year Santa Strombacha leads the way with three singles wins on court one, while Strombacha and sophomore partner Elizaveta Morozova, and junior duo Gabriela Cortes and Sophie Schouten have compiled three wins in doubles play.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
The Cougars played five singles matches against the Roadrunners in the fall. At the HEB Invite in Waco, Texas, Schouten defeated Letizia Corsini, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, sophomore Valeriia Krokhotina outlasted Euka Youri, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7, while Arina Babenko defeated sophomore Iva Sepa, 6-2, 6-3.

At the ITA Regionals in Fort Worth, Texas, sophomore Heta Nuutinen defeated Natalia Guerrero, 6-2, 6-3, while Strombacha took care of Youri, 6-1, 6-2.

Houston owns a 10-2 advantage over UTSA. The Cougars and Roadrunners meet for the seventh straight season with UTSA taking the last two meetings.

Last season the Cougars dropped the match in Houston, 4-2 (Feb. 23), after falling in 2023 in San Antonio, 5-2 (April 9).

In 2023, Cortes and former teammate Elena Trencheva won their doubles match on court two defeating Alexandra Weir and Fatima Gutierrez, 6-3. Cortes and Schouten earned the singles points as Cortes outlasted Magda Tuells in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Schouten defeated Adelyia Mukhutdinova 6-2, 6-3.

UTSA is 10-0 to start the season including five sweeps. Babenko and Youri lead the Roadrunners with seven singles wins. Youri and Valeria Sanchez own a 6-0 record in doubles action.

LAST TIME OUT
The Cougars fell, 4-2, to SMU. Houston claimed the doubles point as Strombacha and Morozova defeated June Bjork and Caroline McGinley, 6-1, and Cortes and Schouten knocked off #84 Drew Morris and Arianna Stavropolous, 6-2.

Strombacha earned the lone singles point on court one as she took care of Sophie Llewellyn, 6-2, 6-2.
