McGinnis drives in three, Schmitz spins 6.0 inning gem
HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team earned its first win of 2025 against Minnesota 4-2 on Saturday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

Houston (1-1) scored first in the bottom half of the opening frame as junior infielder Connor McGinnis ripped a double into right-center field, scoring junior Cade Climie.

Minnesota (1-1) took the lead in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run.
Â
In the fifth, McGinnis crushed a two-run homer to deep center field to retake the lead. McGinnis finished with two hits and three RBIs.

Houston starter Paul Schmitz (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings, gave up just two runs on two hits, and struck out six batters to earn the victory in his second strong outing against Minnesota in his collegiate career. In the 2023 series against Minnesota, Schmitz twirled 6.2 innings while striking out 10 batters at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Houston's defense made a crucial double play to get out of a jam in the fourth inning. With the loaded bases, the Houston converted a 1-2-3 double play started by sophomore right-handed pitcher Alex Solis. The key defensive play was highlighted by an inning ending strikeout by Solis.

With the series now tied, Houston will look to clinch the rubber match Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park. The series finale will stream on ESPN+.
