Freshman guard Kingston Flemings posts 25 points in Cougars' first loss of season
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) – The #3/2 University of Houston Men's Basketball team dropped its first game of the season to #17/16 Tennessee, 76-73, during the second day of the Players Era Championship inside MGM Grand Garden Arena on Tuesday evening. With 25 points, freshman guard Kingston Flemings set a personal best in his young career and now has four 20-plus point performances in seven games this season.
Tennessee's Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 22 points and made all six of his free throws in the final 35 seconds to lift the Volunteers to victory.
Jaylen Carey added 13 points for the Volunteers (7-0), and Bishop Boswell scored 10, including two free throws with 25 seconds left.
Houston senior point guard Milos Uzan scored 17 points. Playing in his hometown, Uzan missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
These teams met in last season's NCAA Tournament with a Final Four trip on the line. Houston won the Elite Eight game 69-50, eventually advancing to the championship before losing in the final minute to Florida.
In the 2025 meeting, Houston struggled from the field in the second half, enabling Tennessee to go on a 10-point run for a 51-46 lead with 9:42 left.
Tennessee remained in front the rest of the way, though the Cougars kept the game close. But the Volunteers held off Houston by converting free throws.
