Cougars out-block Bears, 12.0-2.0, but come up short on the road
WACO, Texas – The Houston Volleyball team dropped the opener of a four-match road streak in a three-set loss to #15 Baylor at Ferrell Center on Wednesday night.
Houston (8-6, 1-2 Big 12) continued to shine in its blocking effort, posting 12.0 in the match. The total, the team's highest mark in a three-set match this year, was 600 percent of Baylor's (9-3, 4-0 Big 12) two blocks, and continued a streak of four straight matches where the Cougars averaged more than 2.50 blocks per set.
Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales led Houston's attack, amassing nine kills, while redshirt senior Kellen Morin added seven to the team's total. Freshman Gillian Pitts led the team with 13 digs while Morin paced the Cougars with six blocks with redshirt senior Barakat Rahmon and senior Avery Shimaitis also adding five each.
The teams evenly split the first 20 points to open the match, but Baylor used a 4-0 run at 10-10 to snag the lead. A 7-0 stretch put the set away, giving the Bears a 25-16 win.
Houston threatened in the second on the heels of its own 7-0 run. Baylor slowly erased the deficit to even the frame at 22-all and fought off a set point to force extras, ultimately securing the set, 27-25.
Another 7-0 run for the Cougars put Houston up 8-4 early in the third. However, a 6-0 run followed by a pair of 3-0 stretches put the Bears back in front, allowing them to claim the third, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
NOTABLE
· Morin surpassed 300 blocks in her career in the match while junior Halle Schroder reached the 100 career block milestone.
