HOUSTON – A double-double by fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland and a career-high 10 assists by graduate guard Ashley Chevalier wasn't enough as the University of Houston Women's Basketball program fell 69-60 against Arizona State inside Fertitta Center on Saturday afternoon.
Houston (4-10, 0-3 Big 12) had three players score in double figures with McFarland leading the pack with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. This marked her first double-double with the Cougars and third of her career. Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke scored 13 points and sophomore guard Summer Bostock tied her career-high 11 points.
Arizona State (8-7, 2-1 Big 12) was led in scoring by graduate guard Tyi Skinner's 18 points, followed by sophomore guard Jyah Lovett's 16 points. Graduate center Nevaeh Parkinson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams kept the first frame very close with Houston taking a one-point lead at the end of the quarter with a jumper from graduate guard Eylia Love. Arizona State posted a 6-0 run to lead as many as three, but Houston answered back each time.
The Sun Devils started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 22-17 lead. Houston went on a 9-0 spurt to jump back in front at the media timeout. The two teams traded blows, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Skinner gave Arizona State a 36-35 lead at the half.
