Defensive back previously named First-Team All-Big 12 by publication
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football defensive back A.J. Haulcy has been named Phil Steele All-America Honorable Mention following his standout campaign while helping lead the Cougars dominant defense, the publication announced this week.
Â
His accolade comes one day after being named Phil Steele First-Team All-Big 12 Conference. The Houston native, who co-led the Big 12 in interceptions (5) and finished second in passes defended (13), was also named to the league's first team by its coaches as well as the Associated Press.
Â
Haulcy led the Cougars in tackles three times and posted 5+ tackles in nine different games, totaling 74 on the season, which ranked second on the team. The durable defender, who has earned Big 12 honors in consecutive season by the league's head coaches, was second on the team with 703 defensive snaps played.
Â
Haulcy finished the season as the Big 12's lone defender with multiple interceptions in a conference road game, accomplishing the feat as part of the Cougars' 30-19 win at TCU (Oct. 4). For his efforts, the Houston native was named the Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week.
