Cougars start home schedule with weekend slate of Louisiana, Northwestern State

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team starts its home schedule this weekend as Louisiana and Northwestern State visit Fertitta Center for the Flo Hyman Classic.

Head Coach David Rehr's squad plays in Fertitta Center for the first time on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Louisiana before a 5 p.m., Saturday tilt against Northwestern State. Fans can claim the 2024 schedule poster at both matches while supplies last. Saturday's match is HISD Night for the Cougars, with HISD students getting free admission to the match, and the team will be signing postmatch autographs.

Houston is 4-1 in home openers since the team shifted its primary venue to the Fertitta Center and Head Coach David Rehr took the helm. The team is also 9-1 in their last 10 home openers and 29-13 since joining the NCAA in 1981.
Houston is coming off a 2-0 showing at the Omaha Invite last weekend, starting the season with a pair of wins against Omaha and Washington State. Both squads were 2023 NCAA Tournament teams, with Wazzu reaching the Sweet Sixteen.
Kate Georgiades picked up her second all-time Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week award this week after tallying 5.22 digs per set (47 total) at the Omaha Invite. She is one of three Houston student-athletes to receive multiple weekly honors from the Big 12, joining Swimming & Diving's Chase Farris and Men's Basketball's Jamal Shead.
The Cougars return four starters from its 2023 team, including three-time All-American libero Georgiades as well as Katie Corelli, Kellen Morin and Annie Cooke.
Rehr signed an impressive incoming class for this season that features three freshmen (middle blocker Addisyn Pohl, libero Coley Shiflet and outside hitter Lily Barron) and six transfers (outside hitters Angela Grieve, Avery Shimaitis and Julianna Dalton, middle blocker Aidan Conner and setters Paige Bernstein and Rebecca Rocassin).
After being ranked in every AVCA poll for the first time in program history last season, the Cougars have started this season receiving votes in the coaches poll in back-to-back weeks.
Houston was picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 this season by the league's coaches. Georgiades was a unanimous selection to the preseason All-Big 12 team.
Louisiana enters the Flo Hyman Classic with a 1-2 record, claiming a win against Murray State while falling to Jackson State and UT Arlington last weekend at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic.
Northwestern State arrives in Houston with a 3-1 record, including a mid-week win against Jackson State on Tuesday. Last weekend, the Lady Demons downed Southern and Jacksonville at the Southern Miss Invitational.
