PREVIEW: Women’s Golf at Schooner Fall Classic Starting Saturday

First Round begins at 8:30 a.m., at Belmar Golf Club
NORMAN, Okla. – After opening its season with a Top-Three showing, the University of Houston Women's Golf program returns to action when it tees off at the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Saturday.Teams will play 18 holes each day on the 6,188-yard, par-70 course with the Final Round set for Monday. Saturday's and Sunday's rounds begin at 8:30 a.m., each day, with Monday's Final Round teeing off at 9 a.m.

MEET the COUGARS
Under the direction of Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Lasprilla, the Cougars will be represented by junior Alexa Saldana, junior Natalie Saint Germain, junior Moa Svedenskiold, freshman Annika Ishiyama and sophomore Maelynn Kim. Sophomore Ellen Yates will compete as an individual.
TEAM FIELD
Houston will compete in a 16-team field featuring Auburn, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Iowa State, Kansas State North Texas, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Texas State, TCU, Tulane, Tulsa, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, and host Oklahoma.

TEE TIMES
Saturday's First Round begins at 8:30 a.m., with Houston competing in groups with student-athletes from Wisconsin and Florida Atlantic.
Kim begins the day for the Cougars off No. 10 at 8:30 a.m., with Ishiyama (8:40 a.m.), Svedenskiold (8:50 a.m.), Saint Germain (9 a.m.) and Saldana (9:10 a.m. CDT) following. Yates begins her First Round at 10:50 a.m., off No. 10.

LAST TIME OUT
In the season-opening tournament at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational last week, Saldana led the Cougars and tied for sixth with a score of 319. The Mexico City native posted a 70 in the Second Round to earn the second Top-10 finish of her career at Champion Trace at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
Svedenskiold tied for 17th at 222 while freshman Annika Ishiyama – making her collegiate debut – joined her two teammates with a score of 224. Ishiyama fired the Cougars' low round of the tournament with a 68 in the Second Round on Sept. 9.
SCHOONER FALL CLASSIC HISTORYThis marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Cougars will compete at the Schooner Fall Classic and the fifth time in the last six years (2020 event was not held due to COVID pandemic).
Houston is coming off back-to-back fourth-place finishes in its two most recent appearances.
A year ago, Houston posted a score of 2-under 838, thanks to three straight rounds of par or lower from Svedenskiold, including 67s in the First and Final Rounds, and a career-low 66 from Kim in the First Round.
At the 2022 Schooner Fall Classic, Saint Germain tied for 10th with a score of 3-under 207 and set a school record with a 6-under 64 in the Final Round in only her second collegiate event.
UP NEXT
The Cougars continue their fall schedule when they compete at the Illini Invitational at Medinah at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill., on Oct. 7-8.
A year ago, Houston tied for fourth in this event as Svedenskiold tied for sixth at 5-under 211, thanks to her seventh eighth and ninth straight rounds of par or better to open the year.
Houston closes its fall campaign at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas, on Oct. 20-21.
The Cougars finished third at the 2023 tournament with Kim tying for ninth at 9-under 207, thanks to a 68 in the Final Round.
