Houston Falls to UCF in Big 12 Opener

Cougars host Arizona State at 7 p.m. Thursday for Hispanic Heritage Night
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Houston Soccer team dropped its Big 12 Conference opener, 5-0 to UCF at the UCF Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.
Houston (3-3-1, 0-1 Big 12) returns to the Carl Lewis International Complex on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., to face Arizona State. Tickets for the match are available here.
UCF (3-1-2, 1-0 Big 12) got out to an early lead as Chloe Netzel netted a penalty kick in the eighth minute.
The Knights converted on two more set pieces before the half. After an attempted clear out following a corner kick, Taylor Jacobson found an opening for the score in the 22nd minute.
In the 37th minute, Edidiong Etim headed in another penalty kick to take a 3-0 UCF lead into the locker room.
The Knights extended their lead in the second half when Etim found Mia Asenjo on the cross for her first goal of the season in the 65th minute.
Netzel recorded her third brace of the season in the 71st minute after her shot was deflected into the air and bounced over redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Dietrich and over the line.
Redshirt sophomore defender Peyton Machado made her first career start while senior midfielder Bri Hilsenteger earned her first start as a Cougar.
Fifth-year defender Sofia Weber made her season debut when she checked into the match to start the second half.
