In Battle Between Cougars, Houston Emerges Victorious

Houston smothers Washington State attack to remain undefeated
OMAHA, Neb. – The rv University of Houston Volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2024 season, remaining undefeated with a 3-1 win over rv Washington State on Saturday afternoon inside the Baxter Arena.
Houston (2-0) cruised to the four-set victory, holding Washington State (0-2) to a sub-.100 hitting percentage in three of the four frames while hitting above .300 in two of the sets.
Graduate Angela Grieve paced Houston with 17 kills, hitting .333 in the match, while senior Katie Corelli finished with 14 kills and a .565 efficiency. Graduate Kate Georgiades rallied Houston with 22 digs, her second 20-plus dig performance this season.
SET ONE
Houston pounced early, forcing Washington State to take timeouts at 5-0 and 10-1 Houston leads. Head Coach David Rehr's squad kept its foot on the gas for the rest of the set, claiming the opener, 25-12.
Houston finished the set with 13 kills and zero errors, hitting .520 led by Greive's six. Houston's defense also shined in the first as Kate Georgiades' seven digs helped limit Washington State to a .065 (9-7-31) efficiency.
SET TWO
Washington State kept the second set closer, tying the frame at 5-5. Houston's first attack error of the match came 14 points into the second, giving Washington State an 8-6 lead. Washington State continued to lead although Houston kept it close, as the match evened at 1-1 with a 25-18 score in set two.
SET THREE
Houston rallied back in the third. Another close set early, Houston used a 4-0 run after the set was tied at 8-all to take the lead for good. Following another 5-0 run later in the frame, Houston closed out the set with a 25-16 victory.
SET FOUR
After Washington State won four of the first five points, Houston fought back to tie the set at 5-5 and pulled away with a 3-0 run, making the score 9-6. Following a 6-0 stretch that made the score 16-9, Houston closed the door on the match, winning the frame 25-19.
NOTABLES
· Junior Avery Shimaitis, redshirt junior Barakat Rahmon and freshman Addisyn Pohl each tallied three blocks, tying for the team lead.
· Grieve tallied her 75th career double-digit kill performance.
· Graduate Annie Cooke posted five aces in the match, claiming sole control of fifth on Houston's all-time list with 118.
· Rehr is now Houston Volleyball's second winningest NCAA head coach with his 105th win.
