Winner of a pair of conference titles, Jamison signs contract through 2026-27
HOUSTON – Following two American Athletic Conference titles and a runner-up finish in the team's first season in the Big 12 Conference, University of Houston Swimming & Diving locked in Head Coach Tanica Jamison through the 2026-27 season with a three-year extension, Deputy Director of Athletics Monty Porter announced Wednesday.
Â
"I am honored and extremely grateful for the confidence that our leadership have placed in me and our staff to continue to lead this amazing program," Jamison said. "I am truly blessed as it is not often that you are surrounded by coaches and support staff that share the same qualities and vision for the program. There is an excitement in the air! We know that we are on the brink of something special with our returning athletes and incoming signing class, the sky is truly the limit. Go Coogs!"
Â
Jamison, the eighth head coach in the program's history, joined Houston in 2021 and flawlessly maintained the team's run of success across her three years with the program. In addition to a pair of conference championships and Swimming Coach of the Year honors, she led the Cougars to a second-place finish at the team's inaugural trip to the Big 12 Championships in March.
Â
"Sustaining and enhancing success is difficult no matter the task, and yet since her arrival here at Houston, under Coach Jamison's leadership, our swimming & diving team have done both," Porter said. "Earning a second-place finish in our first year in the Big 12 is the latest evidence that speaks to success under Tanica and our swim/dive staff. The University of Houston is pleased, excited and fortunate to retain Coach Jamison and her staff, and we look forward to seeing our team continue to compete at a high level in the years ahead."
Â
"Coach T has continued to move our Swimming & Diving program in a championship direction," Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development/SWA and Swimming & Diving Sport Administrator DeJuena Chizer said. "Not only are our student-athletes excelling in the classroom, but they are also making their mark on the NCAA Championship level, and we are excited to watch the momentum continue."
Â
Following her arrival in 2021, Jamison's squads have been nearly unbeatable. In her first season with the Cougars, she finished 4-2 in dual meets and won the Phill Hansel Invitational en route to her first American Athletic Conference title, extending the team's streak six consecutive league crowns. She also oversaw the team's fifth straight trip to the NCAA Championships as diver Chase Farris qualified in the platform competition.
Â
In 2022-23, the team's invincibility in The American continued, collecting a program-record 1,311.5 points at the conference championship meet to seal the Cougars' seventh AAC title and Jamison's second.Â
Â
The team kept its momentum and didn't stumble in its first year in the Big 12. After tests in the regular season against #2 Texas and #11 Texas A&M, Houston claimed second place in its first trip to the Big 12 Championships, the only new entrant to the league to finish in the top three. She also mentored a trio of student-athletes who advanced to the NCAA Championships, including All-American Henrietta Fangli, who finished 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke.Â
Â
Over the course of her Cougar tenure, Jamison has overseen two conference team titles, eight event conference championships, an All-American, six event appearances at the NCAA Championships, 27 All-Conference honorees and the 2023 American Athletic Conference Team Academic Excellence Award.Â
Â
She's also won Swimming Coach of the Year twice and tutored a pair of individuals who captured annual conference honors: Farris was named the AAC's Most Outstanding Diver in 2023 while Mary Catherine Jurica was named Freshman of the Year in 2022.Â
Â
Prior to her arrival in Houston, Jamison spent a decade as a coach at Texas A&M starting in 2011. From 2011-16, she was an assistant coach for the Aggies before being promoted to associate head coach in the summer of 2016.Â
Â
During her time in College Station, Texas, the Aggies captured five conference titles – the 2012 Big 12 Conference and four consecutive Southeastern Conference titles (2016-19) – as well as seven top-three finishes and four top-four finishes at the NCAA Championships. Overall, Jamison helped train six Texas A&M student-athletes to NCAA individual titles, seven Olympians, 33 SEC champions and over 130 NCAA qualifiers.
Â
Jamison was also an incredibly accomplished swimmer, becoming an 11-time All-American, former American Record holder and two-time NCAA Champion in her collegiate swimming career at the University of Texas at Austin. Jamison was the 2000 Big 12 Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, earned the program's Leadership Award in 2001 and 2002 and was a two-time team captain. She was selected as the team's MVP in 2003.
Â
Jamison graduated from Texas with a bachelor's degree in applied learning and development in 2003. She earned her master's degree from Texas A&M in 2019 in sports management.
