PREVIEW: Track & Field Sets Sights on NCAA Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Houston Track and Field program will send 12 student-athletes to the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, beginning Wednesday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Â

STARTING LINE NOTES
- The Cougars have eight student-athletes on the men's side and four on the women's side as they compete in 11 events, including two relays.
- The men are set to compete on Wednesday and Friday, as the women compete Thursday and Saturday.
- The Cougars are highlighted by senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi, who is scheduled to compete at his final NCAA Outdoor Championships in three events: 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 4x100-meter relay.
- At the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Maswanganyi broke the school record in the 100-meter dash with his time of 9.91 for third place. During the 2021 season, the senior placed second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash.
- Sophomore Louie Hinchliffe made noise at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, recording a wind-assisted time of 9.84 in the 100-meter dash to secure the top qualifying spot heading into the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Hinchliffe's time now ranks the second fastest all-condition time in the world. The sophomore will also compete in the 4x100-meter relay.
- Senior De'Vion Wilson will compete at his final NCAA Championships after securing the top qualifying time at the West Preliminary Round with his school record time of 13.24. Wilson placed second at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event with a time of 13.26.
- For the third time in her collegiate career, graduate Sydni Townsend will compete in the 400-meter hurdles and will also run in the 4x400-meter relay at the NCAA Championships. The graduate owns the school record in the event as she extended her mark at the Big 12 Championships with a time of 55.00. At the 2023 Championships, Townsend earned Second Team All-America honors with a ninth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.
- Graduate Kelly-Ann Beckford will compete at her first NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 800-meter and 4x400-meter relay. Beckford set the school record in the 800-meter as she ran a 2:00.70 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in April.
- Freshman Michaela Mouton will make her first career individual NCAA Championships appearance in the 400-meter and will also compete in the 4x400-meter relay. Mouton earned her qualification in the 400-meters as she extended her school record with a personal best time of 50.96.
- Senior Christyan Sampy qualified for his third NCAA Outdoor Championships in the pole vault as he cleared a 5.42m at the NCAA West Regionals. Earlier this season, Sampy extended his school record in the event with a clearance of 5.65m (18' – 6.5). The senior placed eighth at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning First Team All-America honors with a height of 5.45m.
- Senior David Ajama makes his first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance in the triple jump. Ajama secured his ticket to Eugene at the West Preliminary round, recording a personal best jump of 16.07m (52' 8.75) on his first attempt.
- Freshman Antrea Mita will make his NCAA Championships debut as he earned his qualification in the high jump. Mita tied his collegiate mark of 2.17m to punch his ticket to Hayward Field.
- Houston's 4x100-meter relay returns to the NCAA Championships stage as senior Ireon Brown, Hinchliffe, Cayden Broadnax and Maswanganyi are set to compete in the event. The team won the
