Izac Canchola, Claire Meyer score points for the Cougars on Thursday
WACO, Texas – After a three-and-a-half-hour weather delay, the University of Houston Track and Field program earned six final qualifications on Thursday at the 2024 Big 12 Outdoor Conference Championship.
The Cougars opened the day with sunny skies in Waco, Texas, with senior Ayomide Ogunbunmi and junior Charlie O'Block competing in the decathlon. Following five events, Ogunbunmi closed the day in eighth place with 3,683 points, as he posted a personal best in the high jump after clearing 1.92m (6-3.50). O'Block wrapped up day one in 10th place, including a second-place finish in the 100m.
Graduate Izac Canchola scored the first points of the weekend for the Cougars in the men's Javelin. Canchola's 66.19m (217-02) throw resulted in a fourth-place finish and earned five points for Houston.
Houston entered the late afternoon ready to start the running events, but the weather put the meet on hold. Resuming action after multiple lighting strikes in and around the area, the Cougars were able to start a successful evening despite the delay.
Senior Shaun Maswanganyi earned the first finals qualification of the weekend for the Cougars as he ran the fastest time in the prelims of the 200-meter with his time of 20.60. Junior Trey East III earned the final spot in finals with his time of 20.91. The 200-meter final will take place at 7:25 p.m., Saturday.
On the women's side, freshman Michaela Mouton ran a 23.21 to seal her spot in the Saturday final, scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
The Houston hurdle crew added more spots in the finals as junior Dillon Leacock clocked in a 51.83 and junior Nakoah Witt grabbed the final spot with his time of 51.96. On Saturday, Leacock and Witt will compete for a shot at the conference title at 7:05 p.m.
Graduate Sydni Townsend earned a spot in the women's 400-meter hurdles final as she ran a 57.69 to qualify for the 7:15 p.m., Saturday final.
Graduate Claire Meyer closed the evening with the women's 10,000-meter at 34:49.44 to finish in fourth place. Meyer scored five points for the Cougars with her late-night performance.
