Cougars Thump Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind a power surge from first baseman Justin Murray's two homer night, the Houston baseball team erupted for a 13-5 win at Kansas on Friday night.

The 13 runs scored by the Cougars in a Big 12 Conference game are the most in a conference game this season.

Nine of the 10 Houston (25-24, 7-17 Big 12) recorded a hit while four different Cougars drove in multiple runs, headlined by Murray's four hit, two home run, five RBI night – both tying season highs.

In his fourth-straight Friday night start, right hander Cade Citelli (4-2) worked 6.0 innings, while striking out seven. Citelli has pitched 5.0+ innings in each of his last four starts and 6.0 in each of his last two.

Houston scored the first 12 runs of the game with Murray's first of two home runs coming in the third inning. The Cougars erupted for five more runs in the fourth courtesy an RBI double off the bat of center fielder Jacob Schoenvogel and two two-run homers from Murray and second baseman Harold Coll.

The Cougars scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before scoring a 13th run in the ninth.

Kansas (27-18, 13-12 Big 12) scored five runs across the sixth and seventh innings to avoid a run-rule loss but saw their Friday night starter and Preseason All-American Reese Dutton (7-4) get tagged for six runs on five hits. The two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and a conference Pitcher of the Week winner had allowed just three home runs all season before giving up three in one outing to the Cougar bats.

Houston will look to win the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. before concluding the series on Sunday at Noon. Both games will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
