French Fuels Finale Win

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Fueled by senior Jonathan French's four RBI off the bench, the Houston baseball team scored six late runs to erase a three-run deficit and win the series finale 8-5 on Sunday at Cincinnati.

Houston (20-20, 6-15 Big 12) clubbed 13 hits in the game with French accounting for three off the bench. The senior gave the Cougars the lead in the sixth inning on a pinch hit single and then tied the game in the eighth on a solo home run. French drove in Houston's eighth run of the game in the ninth to finish his day 3 for 3 with four RBI.

Cincinnati (23-18, 9-9 Big 12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on their first hit of the game, a three-run home run off lefty Antoine Jean. The Canadian limited the damage, spinning 5.1 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out six.

Freshman Richie Roman (2-0) picked up his second win of the season by coming in to get the last out of the seventh inning. First baseman Justin Murray (4) recorded a six out save with four strikeouts after moving from first to the mound in relief. The righty did not allow a hit and gave up just one walk in his 2.0 innings of work.

Five different Cougars had multiple hits including right fielder Cary Arbolida who drove in three runs on two hits. Arbolida finished the week with nine RBI over five games played.
