1st | Lamar started the game strong, earning five runs at the top of the first. A single and double forced home a pair of runs for the Cardinals, followed by a three-run home run off the bat of Makenzie Wright to put Lamar up by five.
Houston rallied in the bottom of the inning to close the gap. Senior Jazmyn Rollin slipped a hit down the left line, forcing home graduate Kennedy Thomas to put the first run on the board for the Cougars with junior Lair Beautae following closely behind for a 2-RBI double. In the next at-bat, a bunt from junior Turiya Coleman drove Rollin home with Coleman later scoring off on a ground out from junior Brooke Lorenzo, cutting Houston's gap to 5-4.
2nd | After Lamar added a run to its lead in the top of the second, Houston took the lead in the home half of the frame. Coleman tied the game with a two-run double that pushed Rollin and Beautae across the plate. Smith put the Cougars ahead by two immediately after with a two-run homer to dead center.
4th | Lamar cut its deficit to one as a double steal allowed its seventh run to cross, but the game shifted to the Cougars again in the bottom half of the inning. After loading the bases, freshman Bethany Aguilar was hit by a pitch and graduate Katy Repa drew a walk to score a pair. Senior Zaquai Dumas kept the rally alive and added another two runs to the Cougars' tally with a single to left to extend Houston's edge to 12-7.
With Repa and Dumas on second and third, respectively, the Cougars then executed their own double-steal that forced an error, allowing Repa to score and Dumas to advance to third. Hulsey used a ground out to plate Dumas, capping a six-run inning for Houston.
5th | The Cougars clinched the run-rule in walk-off style in the fifth. After graduate Bree Cantu drew a pinch-hit walk, freshman Jordee Wilkins used a pinch-running opportunity to steal second, later advancing to third on a ground out. Two batters later, Smith sent Houston fans home happy, slipping a single to right field that drove home Wilkins, clinching a 15-7 victory.
