Softball Falls in Weekend Opener to UCF

Knights’ pitching silences Houston offense to earn the win
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team couldn't solve UCF pitching in a 9-0, six-inning loss to the Knights at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday night.
Sarah Willis (7-5) picked up a one-hit, complete-game shutout, her first of the season for UCF (23-16, 8-8 Big 12). Graduate Shelby Smith (10-8) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) in five innings in the circle.

Key Innings
3rd | After taking a one-run lead in the first inning, UCF added to its advantage in the third. The first two batters in the inning reached on a single and an error and Ashleigh Griffin drove both of them home with a three-run homer to center field, putting the Knights ahead 4-0.
4th | With a pair of runners in scoring position, a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt allowed UCF to extend its lead to five while keeping runners on the corners. Jasmine Williams then scored on a designed double-steal and Johneisha Rowe capped the inning by crossing home on a single.
6th | UCF clinched the run-rule victory with a pair of runs on a Kennedy Searcy single in the top of the sixth, earning a 9-0 win.

Houston continues the series against UCF at 2 p.m., Saturday, before a noon, Sunday, weekend finale. Both games will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
