Knights’ pitching silences Houston offense to earn the win

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team couldn't solve UCF pitching in a 9-0, six-inning loss to the Knights at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday night.

Sarah Willis (7-5) picked up a one-hit, complete-game shutout, her first of the season for UCF (23-16, 8-8 Big 12). Graduate Shelby Smith (10-8) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) in five innings in the circle.

Houston stole three bases in the game, with junior Turiya Coleman, graduate Paige Hulsey and junior Lair Beautae each recording one.

Key Innings
3^rd | After taking a one-run lead in the first inning, UCF added to its advantage in the third. The first two batters in the inning reached on a single and an error and Ashleigh Griffin drove both of them home with a three-run homer to center field, putting the Knights ahead 4-0.

4^th | With a pair of runners in scoring position, a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt allowed UCF to extend its lead to five while keeping runners on the corners. Jasmine Williams then scored on a designed double-steal and Johneisha Rowe capped the inning by crossing home on a single.

6^th | UCF clinched the run-rule victory with a pair of runs on a Kennedy Searcy single in the top of the sixth, earning a 9-0 win.

UP NEXT
Houston continues the series against UCF at 2 p.m., Saturday, before a noon, Sunday, weekend finale. Both games will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
