Cougars rally for nine runs to extend winning streak to four games
LAKE CHARLES, La. – Every Cougars in the starting lineup recorded a hit as the University of Houston Softball team kept swinging hot bats in a 9-5 win over McNeese on Wednesday night at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.
Graduate Shelby Smith (8-2) tossed 4.2 innings in relief to earn the win for Houston (16-5) in the team's last midweek matchup before conference play begins this weekend. Shaelyn Sanders (4-5) picked up the loss for McNeese (12-10) after allowing five runs (three earned) in four innings.

Key Innings
1st | After a walk, a single and an error put both junior Lair Beautae and Kennedy Thomas in scoring position with no one out, back-to-back sacrifice flies from Rollin and Cantu put Houston up 2-0 early.
3rd | With McNeese cutting Houston's advantage to one with a run in the bottom of the second, the Cougars quickly responded to add back to their lead. Kennedy Thomas singled and scored on a double from Rollin to put Houston up 3-1. Coleman then used her fourth home run of the season to extend the Cougars' lead to 5-1.
The Cowgirls fought back in the bottom of the frame. After loading the bases, a single from Corine Poncho plated a pair to cut McNeese's deficit to two.
4th | Houston's bat stayed hot in the fourth. A double from sophomore Mandy Esman and a single from senior Amanda Carden put runners on the corners early in the inning, followed by Beautae reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Kennedy Thomas drove home Houston's first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly and Rollin drew a walk in the next appearance to reload the bases. Cantu singled home Carden to put Houston up 7-3 and Coleman used a sac-fly to plate the Cougars' third run of the inning.
