Key Innings
1st | Wasting no time, BYU erupted for seven runs in the home half of the first. The first two runners reached on a walk and an error with the lead runner scoring on a double from Huntyr Ava. A fielder's choice followed by a single drove home a pair and set the stage for a three-run home run off the bat of Keila Komoku. BYU added another three batters later as they capitalized on a Houston defensive miscue to take a 7-0 lead after one inning.
2nd | Houston answered in the top of the second. With Cantu and freshman Mikalah Nitta reaching on a walk and single, respectively, then advancing to second and third on a passed ball, graduate Jazmyn Rollin drove home Houston's first run of the game with a single to second base. Two batters later, Nitta came around to score on a ground out off the bat of junior Brooke Lorenzo.
BYU also added a run in the second as Ava singled, stole second and then scored on a single up the middle, making the score 8-2 after two.
4th | After BYU added another two runs in the bottom of the third, Houston clawed one back with a solo home run off the bat of Rollin, cutting the deficit to seven.
5th | BYU clinched a victory in the bottom of the fifth. A lead-off double and a single put runners on the corners, followed by a single from Ava that activated the run rule as BYU earned a 11-3 win.
