PREVIEW: Cougars Open Outdoor Season with Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invitational, TSU Relays

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track and Field program opens its outdoor season hosting the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invitational on Thursday at the Tom Tellez Track at the Carl Lewis International Complex while part of the team will compete at the TSU Relays Friday and Saturday.

STARTING LINE

Houston begins its outdoor season after its inaugural Big 12 Conference Indoor season, where the Cougars claimed three individual conference titles and eight All-American Honors at the NCAA Championships.
De'Vion Wilson won the 60-meter hurdles for Houston's first-ever Big 12 title, Kelly-Ann Beckford took first in the 800-meter and the women's 4x400-meter relay team grabbed the final title for Houston.
Wilson (60-meter hurdles) and Houston's 4x400-meter relay earned First Team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Shaun Maswanganyi (60-meters, 200-meters), Christyan Sampy (pole vault) and Grant Levesque (heptathlon) earned Second Team All-America honors.
Seven indoor school records were set in 2024, with three on the men's side: Wilson (60-meter hurdles), Sampy (pole vault) and Levesque (heptathlon). Four records were set on the women's side: Michaela Mouton (400-meters), Beckford (800-meters), Claire Meyer (5000-meters) and in the 4x400-meter relay (Sydni Townsend, Beckford, Iman Babineaux and Mouton).
Houston set 29 top 10 all-time marks during the indoor season.
The Cougars return four of its 2023 NCAA Outdoor All-Americans: Maswanganyi (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash), Wilson (110-meter hurdles), Sampy (pole vault) and Townsend (400-meter hurdles).
The Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invitational was named after the legendary Houston track star and Hall of Honor inductee, Kirk Baptiste's passing in March 2022.
Texas Southern is running its 72^nd Annual edition of its TSU Relays.
