Duo drive in a pair, Cougars see five-run lead evaporate Tuesday
HOUSTON – The Houston baseball team dropped its midweek game against UTSA 8-7 on Tuesday from Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.
UTSA (4-5) scored six runs over the sixth and seventh innings to erase a 7-2 Houston (6-2) lead and then proceeded to not allow more than two Cougar baserunners over the final three innings.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the second inning on a two-out, two-run home run to dead-center off the bat of second baseman Harold Coll. The Roadrunners struck back in the top of the third with a two-run homer of their own.
Houston retook the lead in the bottom half of the third by scoring on a bases loaded fielder's choice before inducing a run-scoring balk by UTSA's pitcher with a fake steal by first baseman Justin Murray.
A three-run fifth inning for Houston highlighted by left fielder Ace Reese's two-run single pushed the lead to 7-2. The Roadrunners answered back by hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth to make it 7-5 and then scored three runs to take the lead in the seventh.
Shortstop Jake Rainess and right fielder Tre Jones each tallied a pair of hits, while Reese and Coll each drove in a pair of runs.

The Cougars will return to Minute Maid Park for the first time since 2019 to take part in the 2024 Astros Foundation College Classic Friday-Sunday. Houston will take on Texas State at 11 a.m. on Friday, #9 Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Louisiana at 7 p.m. on Sunday night. All three games will be broadcast on Space City Home Network and streamed on Astros.com and the Astros' X, formerly Twitter, account. Tickets are available on Astros.com.
