Four-run eighth gives Houston lead, Bobcats force extras then win on walk-off
Â
The Cougars (6-3) started off strong in the first inning on a two-run single by right fielder Tre Jones to bring in first baseman Justin Murray and shortstop Jake Rainess.
Â
Texas State (6-3) pushed two runs across in the sixth inning to take the lead 3-2. Then in the seventh, the Bobcats managed to stretch the lead with another two runs.
Â
Houston rallied in the eighth with a solo home run by Jones. Following Jones' homer, the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs. Third baseman Alex Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in designated hitter Kenneth Jimenez and then the Cougars capped the inning with a two-run single by center fielder Cameron Nickens to take the lead, 6-5.
Â
The Bobcats tied the game with a home run in the ninth.
Â
In the tenth with two men on base catcher Anthony Tulimero was brought home by Nickens with a sac fly to right field. Despite the Cougars rally, the Bobcats hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th.
Â
Houston's starting pitcher Jaxon Jelkin struck out a career-high eight batters while only allowing one walk. The righty spread two runs across his 5.1 innings of work. The Cougars five pitchers tallied a total of 12 strike outs.
Â
Jones and Rainess finished with multiple hits, while Jones tallied three RBI – Jones' third multi hit game of the season.
