Softball Closes Weekend with Victory over Austin Peay

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Houston Softball team capped its weekend at LSU's Tiger Classic with a 5-3 win over Austin Peay on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

Tamya Waiters (2-2) picked up the win for Houston (12-4) after tossing 4.1 no-hit innings in the circle. Jordan Benefiel (3-3) earned the loss for Austin Peay (5-6), allowing four runs (two earned) in four innings. Shelby Smith (1) also earned her sixth career save.

Graduate Kennedy Thomas earned her seventh multi-hit game this season. She needs one more to tie her mark for most multi-hit games in a season (eight in 2022). She has 24 in her career.
Junior Turiya Coleman also picked up her 24^th career multi-hit game while Bree Cantu notched her 26^th career multi-hit game.
Houston is 4-0 on Sundays this season.
Senior Zaquai Dumas posted her first multi-RBI game of the season.

Key Innings
1^st | For the 11^th time in 16 games, Houston opened the scoring for the game. With runners on the corners, Kennedy Thomas stole second, forcing an error that advanced her to third while also also allowing Beautae to score. Two batters later, Kennedy Thomas crossed the plate on a bunt single from Coleman to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead after one.

4^th | Houston added another two runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Dumas drove home two with a fielder's choice to push the Cougars' advantage to 4-0.

6^th | After the teams traded a run each in the fifth to keep Houston with a four-run lead, Austin Peay cut into the Cougars' advantage in the bottom of the sixth. After having two reach with only one out, the Governors' Brie Howard slipped a single into left-center that allowed a pair to score, finalzing the scoring at 5-3.

UP NEXT
Houston returns home to play its first midweek game of the season against -/rv McNeese on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cougar Softball Stadium and the game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
