Houston will compete Friday, Saturday for Conference Championships
LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Houston Track and Field program heads to Lubbock for its first Big 12 Indoor Conference Championship Friday and Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.
2024 RECAP
During Houston's inaugural Big 12 indoor regular season, the Cougars saw 24 first-place finishes and set four school records during its nine meets. Houston men's track and field were also in the national rankings for two weeks straight.
Houston boasts nine Top-5 and 17 top-10 performances this season in the Big 12 across men's and women's events.
In Albuquerque, N.M., senior pole vaulter Christyan Sampy broke his school record at the Don Kirby Invitational when he cleared a height of 5.62 (18'-5.25) meters (Feb. 9, 2024).
Two more school records were set that same weekend at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass., as Sydni Townsend broke the indoor school record in the 400-meter to win with a time of 52.74. Graduate distance runner Claire Meyer also broke a school record when she ran the 5000-meter at 16:11.97.
At the Robert Platt Invitational, senior multi-athlete Grant Levesque's magical meet came to fruition as he won the heptathlon with 5,853 points. Levesque's point total was enough to break the previous school record set in 2018. On his way to a record-breaking meet, Levesque set a personal best in the 60-meter with a time of 6.77 and a personal best time of 2:51.52 in the 1000-meter.
Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi took home three first-place finishes, twice in the 60-meter and once in the 200-meter. In the most recent meet, Maswanganyi ran the 60-meter in 6.57. However, due to altitude, his time was adjusted to 6.61.
Graduate distance runner Kelly-Ann Beckford finished first in the 800-meter in two meets, setting a season-best time of 2:04.59.
The 800-meter wasn't the only event for Beckford as she was a part of the school indoor record-tying 4x400-meter relay along with seniors Iman Babineaux, Townsend, and freshman Michaela Mouton. Their time of 3:32.28 is good for second in the Big 12 this season.
Graduate thrower Ethan Marshall came out hot in his first season as a Cougar. In the first four meets of the season, Marshall moved his way up to No. 2 in indoor school history for the weight throw.
NEW YEAR, NEW CONFERENCE
The men finished second at Houston's final American Athletic Indoor Conference Championships in 2023, while the women's side finished third. Maswanganyi was named the Most Valuable Performer on the men's side.
The Cougars won eight gold medals, while four returners won their events. Sampy cleared a 5.54m to win the pole vault and senior hurdler De'Vion Wilson won the 60m hurdles (7.74). Beckford crossed the finish line at 2:05.44 to take first in the 800m and Maswanganyi won the 60m (6.67) and 200m dash (20.79) titles.
