
Sampy Earns Houston's First Big 12 Conference Championship Podium

Men end the day tied for seventh with 9.5 team points
LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Christyan Sampy earned the first Big 12 Conference Championship silver medal in school history while senior De'Vion Wilson and freshman Michaela Mouton set two new school records on Friday at the Sports Performance Complex.
Sampy placed second in the pole vault as he cleared 5.53 meters to earn eight points for the men's side, the first points of the Big 12 Championship. Junior Grant Levesque also saw action in the pole vault, placing seventh to earn 1.5 points for his clearance of 5.23 meters.
Earlier in the day, Levesque opened action in the heptathlon, setting four personal bests to lead the event with 3,313 points. In the 60-meter, Levesque ran a 6.70 for first, followed by another first-place finish in the long jump at 7.03 meters. Levesque picked up first in the shot put with a mark of 14.08 meters in his last attempt. The heptathlon will continue at 11 a.m., Saturday, with Levesque in first place, senior Ayomide Ogunbunmi in fourth place, and junior Charlie O'Block in 11th place.
Houston secured spots in finals in the men's 60-meter hurdles, men's 60-meter dash, women's 600-yards, women's 400-meter, women's 800-meter and men's 200-meter.
Wilson made his Big 12 Championship debut in the 60-meter hurdles by earning the top spot as he set a new school indoor record at 7.59, shaving 0.10 off his previous record.
Senior sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi advanced to the finals in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Maswanganyi's time of 6.54 in the 60-meter was a personal best and moved him up to No. 3 in school history. His 200-meter time of 20.62 also marked a personal best and moved the senior to No. 2 in indoor school history.
Freshman sprinter Cayden Broadnax also qualified for the 200-meter final with a time of 20.78, a personal best, and is now No. 5 in indoor school history.
On the women's side, Mouton finished first in the 400-meter prelims with a time of 52.33 to set an indoor school record. Mouton's time surpassed graduate Sydni Townsend's mark set earlier this season at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Townsend also advanced to the 400-meter final, crossing the line at 52.82.
Graduate distance runner Kelly-Ann Beckford ran the top preliminary time in the 800-meter with her mark of 2:05.48.
DAY TWO
Day two of the Big 12 Indoor Championship will begin with the final three events of the men's heptathlon starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, followed by field events at 1 p.m., and running events at 2 p.m.
