Chen in Fourth Following First Day of Border Olympics

Houston freshman sinks 11 birdies, Men’s Golf tied for ninth through 36 holes
LAREDO, Texas – University of Houston Men's Golf freshman Chi Chun Chen sunk 11 birdies and fired a 67 in the Second Round of the Border Olympics to finish the first day in a three-way tie for fourth at 6-under, 138, through 36 holes on Monday from Laredo Country Club.
Chen tapped in six birdies during an eight-hole stretch between his First and Second Rounds and played bogey-free as part of his 5-under Second Round. The Tainan, Taiwan, native bested his previous Low 36 holes (147) from one week ago at the Bentwater Intercollegiate by nine strokes. There, he went on to post his best finish (T-20th) and 54-hole score (220) at the event.
Chen is six strokes back of Illinois State senior Valentin Peugnet who paces the leaderboard at 12-under, 132. The Redbirds lead the 17-team field at 23-under, 553. Houston is tied for ninth at 3-under, 573. The Cougars are one of 10 programs under par and find themselves just seven shots back of fifth-place Troy (10-under, 566).
Houston senior Austyn Reily carded a 1-under, 143, to finish Day One tied for 24th. The Pottsboro, Texas, native jumped out to a hot start, firing an Opening Round 68 which included an eagle, birdie and par to cap the second lowest round of his 2023-24 season.
Houston junior Wolfgang Glawe finished at 1-over, 145, in a tie for 38th. Competing as an individual, redshirt junior Jacob Borow is in 45th at 2-over, 146. After shooting an Opening Round 76, Borow bounced back, sinking four birdies as part of a 2-under, 70, in his Second Round.
Redshirt sophomore Bryant Hiskey II, also competing individually, is tied for 50th at 3-over, 134. Freshman teammate Grant Doggett used an even-par 72 in the Second Round to climb the leaderboard, finishing at 6-over, 150, in a tie for 75th. Individuals redshirt freshman Carson Cooper and senior Nick Sutton are tied for 84th at 10-over, 154. Redshirt sophomore Ruben Lindsay is in 89th at 12-over, 156.
North Texas (15-under, 561) and Lipscomb (13-under, 563) round out the field's Top Three. The Final Round tees off at 8 a.m. Tuesday on the 7,375-yard, par-72 course.
