Houston scores most runs in Schroeder Park history, most runs anywhere since 1988
The Cougars (4-0) offensive onslaught began in the first inning, scoring nine runs on six hits. The inning featured a pair of RBI singles, a two-run double and a two-run home run over the batter's eye in center field by senior catcher Jonathan French – the first of two home runs hit by French.
Houston poured on seven more runs in the second inning which was highlighted by a 412-foot grand slam by senior right fielder Tre Jones.
The Cougars scored their 17th run of the game in the third inning on French's second home run of the game.
Senior shortstop Jake Rainess doubled in a run in the fifth inning and then Houston scored three more runs in the sixth to make it 21-0. Freshman left fielder Ace Reese singled to score pinch runner Tristan Moore, then sophomore third baseman Thomas Lyssy singled two score two more runs. Junior Kenneth Jimenez's second hit of the game scored freshman Anthony Avalos and then Rainess doubled for the second time in as many at bats to score Jimenez and Lyssy.
The Cougar pitching staff of starter Dan Wright (1-0) and relief pitchers Alex Solis, Kyle LaCalameto, Ryan Dollar, Michael Benzor and Richie Roman limited Prairie View A&M (3-1) to three hits. By striking out 15 Panthers, Houston's pitchers recorded 10+ strikeouts for the fourth straight game – the first time the Cougars have opened the first four games of a season striking out 10+ in each game since 2018. Houston scored four more runs in the eighth inning on three hits.
Houston is 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2021.
