Softball Defeats UMass Behind Smith’s One-Hit Effort

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball program continued a hot streak, defeating UMass behind a complete game, one-hit performance from graduate Shelby Smith in the circle at Cougar Softball Stadium on Friday night.
Smith (3-0) allowed just one hit and one walk in seven innings while also striking out one for Houston (7-1), tossing her second complete game of the season. Julianne Bolton (2-1) earned the decision for UMass (3-4) after allowing a run in four innings.

3rd | With runners on the corners, sophomore Mandy Esman gave Houston the lead by driving home Kennedy Thomas ground out.
5th | Graduate Paige Hulsey walked to open the bottom of the fifth and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Lair Beautae before taking third on a wild pitch. Graduate Bree Cantu drove her home with a single to right-center to put Houston up 2-0.
6th | Redshirt junior Clare Ceynowa added an insurance run in the sixth by driving home Smith. After freshman Jordee Wilkins pinch-ran for Ceynowa and stole second, a single from Hulsey allowed her to cross the plate, pushing the score to 4-0. Hulsey reached home on an error in the next at-bat to cap the scoring, giving the Cougars a 5-0 win.
