Cougars cruise to win over Indiana State, fall to Rutgers; Sunday’s game moved earlier due to weather
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team earned a 6-1 victory in its first game of the day against Indiana State, but fell to Rutgers in six-innings in the late contest, 10-2.
Houston's (3-1) game against Rutgers on Sunday was also moved to 10:30 a.m. due to expected weather. The Colgate-Indiana State game will now be played at 8 a.m.
Game One – Houston 6, Indiana State 1
Houston (3-0) cruised to an undefeated three-game start with a seven-inning win over Indiana State (0-4) to begin day two at the Houston Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Paris Lehman (1-0) earned her first win as a Cougar in relief, tossing 4.0 innings while only allowing one run. Sophomore Tamya Waiters started for Houston, spinning three innings in the circle while allowing no runs and one hit. Lauren Sackett (0-2) earned the loss for Indiana State.

Key Innings
1st | A pair of two-run homers off the bats of Coleman and Cantu gave Houston an early 4-0 lead. Coleman, Cantu, junior Lair Beautae and freshman Mikalah Nitta all scored in the inning.
4th | After graduate Paige Hulsey led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Beautae ground out, Cantu doubled her home to push the Cougars' lead to 5-0. Nitta singled in the next at-bat to drive home Cantu to cap Houston's scoring.
7th | Indiana State put a pair of runners in scoring position with only one out, but Lehman forced a pair of ground outs to allow only one run to score, sealing the win for Houston.
Game Two – Rutgers 10, Houston 2
Sophomore Nicole Bodeux (0-1) took the loss in the circle for Houston (3-1) in game two, allowing three runs on four hits in three innings. Mattie Boyd (2-0) picked up the complete-game win for Rutgers.

1st | After loading the bases on a walk and a pair of hit-by-pitches, Cantu drove home her fourth run of the day with a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. Nitta scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to put Houston ahead, 2-0.
3rd | Rutgers got on the board with a throwing error, then a two-run homer off the bat of Katie Wingert put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 3-2, for good.
6th | Following a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, Rutgers sealed the run-rule win with another three runs in the sixth inning. A solo home run from Morgan Smith put the Scarlet Knights up by six and another two runs crossed later in the frame clinched a 10-2 win for Rutgers.

Houston closes out the Houston Invitational with a rematch against Rutgers on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m.
