Houston Drops Midweek Bout to #23 Baylor

Cougars win first set but come up short against ranked Bears
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team dropped its midweek matchup to #23 Baylor in four sets on Wednesday evening inside Fertitta Center.
Four Cougars collected double-digit digs in the match, including a career-high 10 from junior libero Alana Torres-Rivera. Joining the Caguas, Puerto Rico, native in double-figures were graduates Kate Georgiades (16), Angela Grieve (14) and Annie Cooke (12).
Both Grieve and Cooke recorded double doubles in the match, their eighth and sixth of the season, respectively. Grieve added a match-best 18 kills to her digs total while Cooke posted a match-best 40 assists. Redshirt junior middle blocker Barakat Rahmon tied the Cougars' individual season high with seven blocks, including three solo stops with senior opposite Katie Corelli tallying her 12thdouble-digit kill effort of the season with 11.
Houston (8-10, 3-5 Big 12) started the match strong, winning the first four points to take the lead. Baylor fought back, evening the frame at 7-7 and trading blows with Houston after, resulting in ties at 8-8, 9-9, 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14. The Cougars reclaimed an advantage again with a 3-0 run that pushed the score to 17-14, holding the lead for the remainder of the set to claim a 25-23 set win.
Baylor answered in the second. After remaining even after 10 points, the Cougars used a 4-1 run to take the lead. The Bears seized the momentum in the frame after, rattling off a 10-3 stretch that gave them the lead for good, sealing a 25-16 set win.
The Bears continued to control play in the third. Taking a 7-3 early edge, the Bears extended their lead later in the frame with a 4-0 run that helped Baylor steal the set, 25-17.
Baylor closed off a comeback attempt from the Cougars in the fourth. Remaining even after 16 points, Baylor used a 4-0 run to take the lead, further extending it later to 20-13. Houston rallied back late with a pair of 3-0 runs, but the Bears shut the door, winning the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

· With an announced attendance of 1,554, Houston played in front of its fifth-largest crowd ever inside the Fertitta Center.
· Houston has played six ranked teams so far this season.
· Cooke moved into a tie for seventh on Houston's career matches played list with her 130th career match.
· The Cougars out-killed Baylor, 49-48.
