Tennis Collects Seven Opening Round Victories at ITA Regional Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas – The University of Houston Tennis team collected seven wins through the first two days of the ITA Texas Regional Championship at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

Junior Gabriela Cortes led the Cougars in the qualifying singles draw as she defeated Sam Houston's Sara Sadadinovic, 6-2, 6-0 before an injury allowed her to move into the Qualifying Singles Round of 16.

After knocking off UT Arlington's Nika Novikova and Maria Araoz-Gosn, 8-1, Cortes and sophomore Heta Nuutinen took a nail-biter from Texas State's Kiana Graham and Callie Creath, 8-7(2), to advance to the Doubles Round of 16.

Fifth-year Santa Strombacha defeated Sofia Franco Salcedo (UIW), 7-6(3), 6-0, in the opening round of the singles main draw.
