Women’s Basketball Drops Overtime Contest at UCF

Cougars look to bounce back against Cincinnati 7 p.m., Tuesday
ORLANDO, Fla. – Despite four Cougars scoring in double figures, the University of Houston Women's Basketball program fell in overtime, 92-87, against UCF on Saturday afternoon inside Addition Financial Arena.
Houston (11-9, 2-7 Big 12) posted 30 points from UCF's 18 turnovers and held the Knights to just nine points off turnovers.
UCF (10-8, 1-7 Big 12) opened the game on a 10-2 run before the Cougars answered with a 10-0 run of their own. Graduate guard Britney Onyeje knocked down a 3-pointer, followed by another 3-pointer by junior guard Maliyah Johnson to give Houston the 14-13 lead.
In the first half, the Cougars' bench outscored the Knights' bench 26-4. UCF's bench would not score in the second half. Freshman guard Kierra Merchant scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half.
Houston faced foul trouble as they committed 32 personal fouls. Thirty-three of UCF's points came from the charity stripe as they shot 78.6% (33-42) from the line. Kaitlin Peterson made 11 of her 14 free throws to lead the Knights.
UCF was the aggressor in overtime as the Knights started the extra period on a 7-2 run. Peterson scored nine points in overtime as UCF outscored Houston 14-10 to secure their first win in conference play.

Houston returns to Fertitta Center for a two-game homestand as it welcomes Cincinnati at 7 p.m., Tuesday for its Salute to Service followed by a 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 4 game against #13/15 Baylor. Fans are encouraged to wear black as part of the Cougars' blackout game against Baylor.
